About Special Education
The Lake and Peninsula School District provides special education services to students ages 3-21 who have qualifying disabilities. Services are provided in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Alaska state regulations.
Child Find
Child Find is a federally mandated program that identifies, locates, and evaluates children with disabilities who may need special education services. If you suspect your child may have a disability, contact your school or the district special education office.

Services We Provide
We offer a range of special education services including:
- Speech-Language Therapy — For students with communication disorders
- Occupational Therapy — For students with fine motor challenges
- Physical Therapy — For students with gross motor needs
- Specialized Instruction — Individualized education in core subjects
- Behavior Support — Positive behavior interventions and supports
- Transition Services — Preparing students for life after high school
Related Services
In addition to direct instruction, we provide related services such as:
- Transportation to special education programs
- Counseling services
- School nursing services
- Assistive technology
Individualized Education Program (IEP)
An IEP is a written document that’s developed for each child receiving special education services. The IEP team includes:
- Parents/Guardians
- Special Education Teacher
- Regular Education Teacher
- School Administrator
- Related Service Providers (when appropriate)
- Student (when appropriate)
Parent Rights
Parents have specific rights under IDEA, including:
- Participation in IEP meetings
- Access to educational records
- Prior written notice for changes in services
- Procedural safeguards
- Option to resolve disputes through mediation or due process
