A breath of fresh air! Because of our remoteness, you won’t find shopping malls, movie theaters, or other major entertainment centers. Take advantage of the many opportunities to explore your new surroundings, including hiking, camping, berry picking, and fishing. Be very careful when venturing outside, and talk with local staff before going on any excursion.
Depending on your community, you may also travel around by four-wheeler (ATV), boat, and occasionally snowmachine.
For cold or rainy days, consider bringing hobbies such as art supplies, quilting materials, books, camera equipment, collections, and games.
Hunting and Fishing
You will need a license to fish or hunt. The State of Alaska requires twelve months of continuous residency for a resident license and takes its licensing requirements very seriously. Nonresidents pay additional fees to hunt big game. For details, see the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
If you travel with firearms, check the regulations for the state you’re leaving, for Alaska, and the TSA’s rules for flying.
